Club Spotlight - Newark & Sherwood United

“To lead local football to new heights, uniting through excellence, empowering youth, embracing sustainability, and creating a vibrant, family-friendly environment where everyone thrives.”

Newark & Sherwood United was founded in 1901 as A.J. Simpson and Co., later becoming Worthington Simpson and eventually Newark FC in 2020. Starting in the Newark Ironmongers’ League, the club progressed through various leagues, achieving notable successes including multiple Notts Alliance Cups and league titles. Renamed Newark Flowserve in the late 1990s, the club entered the FA's national pyramid in 2004 and experienced a resurgence after reforming in 2013. They climbed the leagues, winning titles, league cups, and achieving FA Vase and FA Cup milestones. The club's historic Low fields ground hosted both cricket and bowls, featuring legendary players, before its loss due to factory closure. Recent developments under local businessman Steff Wright and manager Nathan Arnold saw a return to Newark & Sherwood at Collingham’s Station Road ground. With Jonathan D’Laryea taking over management in 2022, the club won the Notts Senior Cup for the first time, highlighted by a record crowd of 1,004 for the semi-final where they beat Nottingham Forest’s Academy on their way to lifting the trophy. Now led by manager Romaine Graham, ‘The Highwaymen’ keep marching on and striving for success both on and off the pitch. Renowned players and figures from the past include George Lambert, Gerry Fell, and Dennis Judson. Traditionally in white kits, the club now dons Nottinghamshire green as it embraces a new era with 122 years of legacy.

Their board includes Chair - Steff Wright, Vice Chairperson – Glenn Cobb, Commercial Director - Michael Hardy and Operations Director - Jed Wright. They also have a student from Loughborough University, Kirtin Patel, who is with the club on his placement year, in an events and business management role which covers most things off the pitch at the club. Kirtin works with Jed to conduct most of the day-to-day tasks, with Glenn also focusing on his role as secretary. They have a hardworking team of volunteers who are committed to doing their bit at every home matchday. They have a great team and everyone knows their jobs.

Alongside working with Kirtin from Loughborough University, the club are also in the process of forming a 'Youth Board' with students from the local schools where they are currently based in Grantham. This will give students an opportunity to experience running a non-league football club - empowered to make decisions and then deliver their ideas through volunteering on a matchday.

In their efforts to do what is best for the health of our planet and raise awareness of climate issues, the food the club serve on matchdays to both supporters and players is 100% plant based. Food is a massive part of any person or organisations climate footprint, so this is one key change they have been able to make as they are currently ground sharing. The club are also working with Recirculate Systems to trial their reuseable cup system, which will go on to be used at Gloucester Rugby club in its next trial, before being rolled out in stadiums across the country and further afield. The club engage with BCorp businesses and have several B Corps sponsoring us - B Corp is a certification for your business that proves you are not just prioritising profit, but also people and the planet. They will be hosting a 'People, Planet Pint' event this year at one of their matches and starting conversations around what can be done to help in the climate crisis. The club believe grassroots sport is an important area to create change, and there are lots of benefits to supporting local grassroots teams over travelling home and away for premier league teams, including of course the massive increase in travel to follow premier league teams across the country and even abroad.
